Modern Milk Lactation Support

Our Lactation Services

  • Click Book an Appointment and choose your visit type.
  • After booking, you’ll receive intake paperwork to provide your insurance details.
  • We submit claims after your visit. Coverage is determined by your insurer. Feel free to check coverage with your insurance plan prior to booking.
  • Every insurance plan is unique. While most families find their visits are covered, we can’t guarantee payment ahead of time. If your plan applies visits to a deductible or doesn’t cover lactation, you will be responsible for the balance.
  • Some plans (like UnitedHealthcare or Cigna) ask you to take a quick extra step to verify coverage. Don’t worry — we’ll send you easy instructions if this applies to you.
  • Our goal is to make the process as smooth as possible so you can focus on feeding your baby, not the paperwork!
  • You may wish to check with your insurance provider to see if lactation services are covered. Common billing codes are S9443 and 99404.

Reached out to Modern Milk as my baby was having trouble latching and was still quite under her birth weight. Scheduled two lactation consultations with Jill and truly had a wonderful experience. Jill took time to answer all of my questions, helped us create a plan and fit me properly with my pump. Scheduling was super easy and Jill was responsive over email with additional questions I had in between sessions. My baby is no longer having a problem latching and is putting weight on. Thank you so much Jill!

Two days out of the hospital I was desperate for lactation help. Modern Milk scheduled me under 24 hours later with an in-home lactation specialist. Stephanie saved me from a breakdown with her knowledge and guidance on learning to breastfeed our newborn. I highly recommend new moms to make booking a lactation appointment a must after baby arrives; and I will make this my shower gift going forward to any new moms as well! Since my in-home appointment I’ve attended Modern Milk’s free breastfeeding support group and really enjoyed talking with the other moms and the consultant who lead the class

Frequently Asked Questions About Lactation Consultations

What happens during a lactation consultation?

We understand that every breastfeeding journey is unique. Whether you’re a first-time mom or a second or third-time mom, we are here to guide you through any breastfeeding challenges you may face. From latch issues to milk supply concerns, we’ll work closely with you to develop a personalized plan that promotes a successful breastfeeding experience for you and your little one!

Can I get a lactation consultation before my baby is born?

Modern Milk offers prenatal lactation consults to help expecting moms feel confident and prepared before baby arrives. Our IBCLC-certified consultants provide personalized guidance on positioning, latching, and what to expect in the early days of breastfeeding.

Do you offer lactation support for twins?

Breastfeeding twins comes with unique challenges, and our IBCLC lactation consultants are here to help. Twins breastfeeding consults focus on positioning, latch, milk supply, and creating a feeding plan that works for both babies and parents.

Does insurance cover a lactation consult?

Many insurance plans cover lactation consultations at no cost to you, and Modern Milk is in-network with major carriers including UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. Coverage varies by plan, so we handle the insurance details for you: you book your appointment, submit your insurance information, and Modern Milk submits the claim directly using standard lactation billing codes (S9443, 99404). Check the “We Are In-Network With” section above for your specific carrier’s requirements.

How does insurance billing work for a lactation consultation?

Booking with insurance at Modern Milk is a three-step process: you book your appointment, submit your insurance details (for mom and baby), and Modern Milk files the claim on your behalf after your visit, using standard lactation consultation billing codes. Both mom and baby’s insurance are billed. We typically hear back from insurance within 1-4 weeks regarding what they’ll cover for your visit. Even with in-network coverage, benefits can vary based on your deductible and specific plan requirements, so we recommend reviewing the friendly notes on this page or contacting your insurer to confirm your coverage before your visit.

We are in-network with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield. We also accept United Healthcare and UMR via The Lactation Network (approval is required prior to your visit via this link) and Cigna via Wildflower (approval is required prior to your visit via this link).

Do I need a referral to book a lactation consultation?

No, you don’t need a referral to book a lactation consultation with Modern Milk. You can schedule directly, whether you’re preparing prenatally or need support after your baby arrives

Who are Modern Milk's lactation consultants?

Modern Milk’s lactation team is led by founder Stephanie Nguyen, RN, MSN, WHNP-C, IBCLC, who has over 20 years of nursing experience including labor and delivery and postpartum care, plus 15+ years as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She’s joined by Jill Marion, IBCLC. Both are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, the gold-standard credential in breastfeeding medicine.

What's the difference between a lactation consultation and a breastfeeding class?

A lactation consultation is a one-on-one, personalized session focused on your specific feeding situation, while a breastfeeding class is a group or self-paced educational course covering general breastfeeding fundamentals. Modern Milk offers both: an in-person breastfeeding class during your third trimester, and one-on-one consultations if specific challenges come up before or after birth. If you’re expecting and don’t have any breast-related health concerns, our monthly in-person breastfeeding class or online breastfeeding class would be the best way to prepare for breastfeeding before baby arrives.

Can I rent a breast pump or baby scale from Modern Milk?

Yes, Modern Milk offers breast pump and baby scale rentals in addition to lactation consultations. This is useful if you want to track your baby’s weight gain between pediatrician visits or need a hospital-grade pump without the upfront cost of buying one.

Can I have my breast milk freeze-dried?

Yes, Modern Milk partners with Milk by Mom to offer breast milk freeze-drying services, which extends the shelf life of your milk and makes it easier to store and travel with. Ask about current promo codes when you drop off your milk.

What does Modern Milk's online breastfeeding course cover?

Modern Milk’s online breastfeeding course, Mama’s Milk Mastery, includes more than 40 videos led by founder Stephanie Nguyen covering breastfeeding fundamentals at your own pace. It’s a good option if you want in-depth education before baby arrives but prefer a self-paced format over an in-person class.
